About Us
The University of Maryland was established in 1807 with the professional Medical school in Baltimore, MD. It then merged with the growing campus in College Park. The University of Maryland Alumni Association began sometime around 1892. The association was reorganized in 1948 to encompass the College Park campus and the five professional schools located in Baltimore, MD. Over the next several years, the University grew to include the Eastern Shore Campus, the Baltimore County Campus and the University of Maryland University College. In the 1970s, the leadership of the association realized it had a worldwide constituency and decided it would be more appropriate to change its name to reflect its international members thus creating the University of Maryland Alumni Association-International, Inc. (AA-I).
In 1988, Governor Schafer and the State Legislature reorganized higher education creating the University of Maryland System (now known as the University System of Maryland or USM). This combined the five existing campuses with 6 additional institutions to create the current system: University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, University of Maryland, Baltimore (6 professional schools: Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Dentistry), University of Maryland Global Campus, Bowie State University, Towson University, Salisbury University, University of Baltimore, Coppin State College and Frostburg University. At this point, each university was given the right to create and maintain their own alumni associations. This action separated the existing members of the University of Maryland Alumni Association-International into their various home campuses. An Executive Committee remained in existence to manage the funds created from the Life Membership Program.
In the early 1990’s the Executive Committee decided to provide specific alumni programs to the benefit of all the USM institutions. Thus the Grant Program and Scholarship Programs were established.
Today, the University of Maryland Alumni Association-International, Inc. (AA-I) consists of an Executive Committee made up of a representative from each USM institution and several ex-officio members from the original Executive Committee. It consists of a President, a 1st VP, a 2nd VP and an administrative officer who is appointed by the Executive Committee to manage the day to day appointments of the organization. Each officer serves a two year term and moves up consecutively. AA-I has an office located in the Elkins Building (which houses the USM administrative offices) at 3300 Metzerott Rd., Adelphi, MD 20783. The assets of AA-I are managed by the University System of Maryland Foundation and have grown to just over $4 million as of fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. Each year AA-I provides funds from the endowment income to support a leadership Scholarship Program and a Grant Program designed to support and encourage alumni growth.
